Shreya Prakash Against All Odds
Acrylic and mixed media on watercolor paper
11"x14"
Wheeler High School
Grade 10
“Against All Odds” is a painting of Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel laureate who has fought for the rights of children, specially girls to have access to education in her native country, Pakistan. She is a huge inspiration because despite being shot in the head by the Taliban, she continued to advocate fearlessly for the rights of children.

Stuck between two worlds of cultures-- constantly feeling out of place-- a stranger in their own home; this complex sense of alienation has become a greatly shared experience among first generation immigrants. Through my piece, I hoped to portray this feeling of limitation from truly being oneself-- of being wholly accepted.

Katie Kwon Girl in Armor
Acrylic on canvas
9" x 12"
Chattahoochee High School
Grade 11
This acrylic painting portrays how personal experiences or societal pressures make us feel as if we must fit into a certain mold. As a result, we learn to reject others' warmth and even our own. We thus become weak and attempt to hide behind armor to appear strong. In my piece, the girl wears extravagant clothes to make her seem almost too pretty to approach. It is only when she finally embraces her true self that she can live happily and feel warmth again.

This mixed media piece depicts the sensation of being with comfortable company. Rushed over by happiness, peace, excitement, and nerves, one can feel a variety of conflicting emotions while connecting with someone else. In order to illustrate this idea, I employed a variety of materials: charcoal, photo imprinting, acrylic paint, encaustics, and oil paint on wood.
