Artist Muse Statement:
My current clay projects are inspired by the American Art Pottery Movement - 1870-1950s, and affiliated pottery designs created by the Saturday Evening Girls from the women-run Paul Revere Pottery (circa 1908-1942). In particular, I find one of their most celebrated artists, Sarah Galner’s (1894-1982), very enduring for her “story in clay” style that transcends functionality.

This world we live in is full of beauty and wonder! I can’t help but be inspired when I step out into nature. The vibrant color of lichen on a rough, gray boulder, colorful mushrooms, and leaves that light up like fire in the fall, a cascading waterfall surrounded by rhododendron blossoms, a butterfly flitting through the backyard with gossamer wings, all of these things inspire me. There are an infinite number of things to be inspired by, and I am so grateful to have a way to express that inspiration through clay, and a paintbrush in my hands.

The Owl is my Muse as I am seeking Wisdom. I’ve moved many times over the years. Sometimes running away from things, sometimes running to them and, of course, sometimes it’s been both. However, this time it involves an entire family, my offspring. It affects their well-being, not just my own. So far I believe with my whole being we made the best decision. As I contemplate the life we are building here in Georgia, I am grateful for the Owl and her quiet wisdom, shrewd judgement and love

My enchantment, and admiration for African art, for its diversity with many mediums, rustic beauty, earthiness along with vibrant colors, & symbolisms, has always kept me mesmerized for a long while.
This is my first attempt in making an African mask by carving an original design, using a “Sgraffito”tool on white clay, with few coats of black slip painted over it, for contrast.
African masks especially, tell stories through specific designs, and have symbols that convey special messages that means a lot to the wearer of the mask.
Sgraffito technique used to create, and carve out a design on the mask depicts African symbols

Ning Sun Lady Rainicorn
Colored Pencil
10x8 inches
nfs
Inspiration:
Her name is Lady Rainicorn. She is a white cat of many colors. She was the runt of the litter, smaller and shyer than her brother and sister. She slowly found her place in the world. Now, she is a sassy and energetic one year-old. She will lie on her back and ask you to rub her belly, only to grab your arm and lock you in a trap. She can sit, stand up, shake, steal your food, and give you a high-five. What can’t she do!
Ning Sun The Grackle
Colored Pencil
6x8 inches
nfs
Inspiration:
The color inspiration for the Grackle is the idea that colors are mysterious and never what they seem. Grackles are usually dark and yet colorful birds. Their feathers are mostly black with an iridescent quality to them that seems otherworldly. The color black is a union of all colors. The colors we see around us are never truly one singular color. Unraveling the layers of colors feels like an exciting adventure. No “black” was used in this piece.

Gerald BurchThe Seeds of Our Descendants 1st Place Member
Mixed Media
28x34 inches
$2900
This painting comes from my own memories. My mother and grandparents were migrant farmers. They hoed and plowed the fields. I have also been in the fields myself, albeit I was very young. They stayed on the Tallassee Plantation in a cabin that was similar to a old slave shack.
The name of this piece comes from my seeing that not only were our foreparents planting seeds for the future vegetable harvest; but they were, through their hard work and sacrifice, planting the seeds for the future crops of their children, and their childrens children, and their childrens childrens childrens children.
This composition is about planting seeds and picking weeds for another season. Hoping and praying that their posterity grow up straight and strong; and in turn, do the same thing for all of our future generations..

The impetus for this composition is rooted in the question WHY. It is rooted in my childhood in the Jim Crow South in the 50's and 60's.

Virginia Watson Old Sailor Redoux
Encaustic
9.5 x 6.5 inches
nfs
This piece originated from a book called Evard Munch, Master Printmaker. Most of us
associate Edvard Munch with The Scream, one of the most iconic paintings in art
history. I was surprised and delighted to discover he was such
an innovative artist and worked in a variety of mediums. He
pushed the boundaries of what can be done, especially in
printmaking. His woodcut, Old Sailor, captured me for the
sense of weary resilience on his model’s face. I had never used
carving tools before and it was a great opportunity to give it a
try, especially since the layers of wax are so forgiving.

I view creativity as a whimsical force, the closest thing we have to wielding magic. It is not transactional, its payoffs never guaranteed and rarely delivered in the form you expect. The fastest way to kill it is to strangle it with the leash of expectation, the demand of payoff or attention. All you can do is show up, put in the work, and see what happens. Embrace your trickster energy and do it, always, for the sheer joy of creating.

My elder brother has been a renowned curmudgeon as long as I can remember. Smiles were rare, and never, ever in photos. Then along came Jan. They had worked together more than 40 years ago.

The anime Blue Period inspired me to to get back into art. It’s about a boy and his journey to art school and at the time I watched it I was so busy with work that I completely gave up on what I loved. I knew I had to find something to help me create again and that’s how I ended up at JCAC. I am very thankful for my my experience here and this is my little tribute to my journey getting here. Thank you!

I am very thankful she walked into my life, I love her and her three black whiskers with all my heart.

Virginia Watson Wings and a Prayer
Mixed media/Encaustic

Inspiration: My friend Alicia and I went for a walk and a dragonfly joined us for part of the way. She was delighted because she said, “the dragonfly is my spirit animal.” Soon after, she was away at an important healing retreat, and I was thinking about her and about dragonflies, which represent transformation. I sketched and painted the original image used in this mixed media piece while continuing to think about Alicia and wishing her well, and it became a type of meditative prayer. Later I scanned the piece and printed it on paper to use in this encaustic collage.

Monika Mittal Brazil rainforest flowers 2
$850
Rainforests are a colorful bonanza for your eyes. May shades of green that Liquitex can not create for an artist to paint are present in the scene. Small frogs and butterflies filled with color combinations that I didn't know possible, are flying and hopping around you. This scenery evolves every few moments and inspires one to create art, sing songs, and dance. Those colors and the fragrances of the rain in the forest have stayed in my senses for years and it shows up in my paintings from time to time.

What inspired me to create this quilt? Simple, the astounding beauty of Colorado, my home state,
Our family did not take vacations, as other families did. As owners of a neighborhood grocery store mom and dad worked 7 days a week until I was about 8 years old. At that time they took a single day off each week, Sunday. We would pile into the car on Saturday evening, drive into the night for what seemed like hours and spend the night in a tiny court motel or set up the tent next to a stream. On Sunday morning we would excitedly explore the woods, streams, mountains and sights of Colorado. As Sunday evening fell, once again we piled into that car for the trek home. Exhausted! We experienced so much of Colorado over the next few years and the aspen trees always held a special mystery for me—the rustling, the changing colors, the marred white bark. They provided me with ample inspiration to draw, color, and arrange cut papers to save my memories.
This quilt is not for sale, it belongs to my aunt.
