This class will explore painting with oils or acrylics for beginning to intermediate painters. In the first class, we will all paint a simple landscape together. The instructor will demonstrate a few minutes at a time her method of painting the landscape from the thumbnail sketch, to the sketch on the canvas, the block in with washes, the mixing of color, and laying it onto the canvas. After each step is demonstrated, the class will complete this step before the instructor moves on. In subsequent classes, we'll move on to a simple still life. Eventually the class can vote on what we'd like to paint, with flexibility for those who prefer a different subject. Jill paints landscapes, still lifes, and portraits, and will teach the basics of each.
Paint- acrylics, oils, or water mixable oils. I use Cobra or Winsor & Newton Artisan water mixable oils, but you can use whatever you have.
Cadmium yellow hue, Yellow Ochre, Naples Yellow, Cadmium Red hue, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Pthalo Blue, Ivory Black, Titanium White. We'll be mixing greens, oranges, and purples, but I also have Cadmium orange hue. I rarely use tube colors of greens or purple. I buy the Cadmium hues because they don't contain cadmium, a heavy metal, and are therefore safer.
Container for water or Gamsol, if you use oils (No mineral spirits, please, as the odor is too strong for classroom use)
Canvases- small canvases (8'x10', 9'x12', 11'x14', or 12'x16''s) You will need one for every two classes
Brushes- an assortment of brushes from 1' flats to smaller brushes for fine detail
Palette- I prefer a glass palette, but disposable is fine
Palette knife- I prefer a thin, metal, flexible blade that comes to a point
Sketch pad and pencil
