Have you ever wanted to know more about Art History but been intimidated by the thought of endless slide presentations and sixty pounds texts? Fear no more. Come join our band of merry art lovers as we delve into the fascinating world of Impressionism, the revolutionary nineteenth century movement that marks the beginning of modern art as we know it today.
Your journey will begin with an overview of the unique and rapidly changing cultural climate of 19th century Europe which fostered a period of intense creativity and innovation within the art world. As a group of innovative artists revolted against the staid and traditional practices of the art establishment and the rigid standards of the Academy, an exciting new movement, Impressionism, was born. We will examine its innovative techniques, learn about the fascinating lives of the painters,and most importantly the paintings themselves. Each class will highlight the works of one individual Impressionist artist. The informal class format will include a visual presentation, interactive discussion and of course, snacks and coffee.
