This class is an exciting opportunity to explore the medium of Silk Painting (not to be confused with silk screen printing). Each student will work on a 22"x22" silk scarf, as well as, an oblong 11"x60" scarf. Students will use a water based resist to outline simple images on silk. Drawing skills are not required. Dyes will be applied in a controlled but flowing manner onto the silk that has been stretched taut and suspended on a frame.
This class will cover the basics of color mixing and color theory with the use of vibrant professional liquid acid dyes that chemically bond to the silk. We will also discuss how designs or images may be laid out in a pleasing composition.
Various techniques will be introduced including salt textures, soy wax batik and thickened dye applications.
Students have the option of using a variety of templates (flowers, shells, decorative motifs) to create a painting layout. Or by sketching their own simple design from references they may bring to class.
Finished paintings may be wearable art tied around the neck or displayed as a wall hanging stretched with canvas stretchers or wooden dowels.
