This class is an exciting opportunity to explore the medium of Silk Painting (not to be confused with silk screen printing). Each student will work on a 22”x22” square silk scarf. A water based resist will be applied to outline simple images on silk. Drawing skills are not required. Dyes will be applied in a controlled but flowing way onto the silk that has been
stretched taut and suspended on a frame.
This class will cover the basics of color mixing and color theory with the use of vibrant professional liquid acid dyes that chemically bond to the silk. We will also discuss how designs or images may be laid out in a pleasing composition.
Various techniques will also be introduced including salt textures, soy wax batik and thickened dye applications.
Students will have the option of using a variety of templates (flowers, shells, decorative motifs) to create a painting layout, or sketching out their own simple design from reference they may bring with them.
Finished paintings may be wearable art tied around the neck or displayed as a wall hanging stretched out with canvas stretchers or wooden dowels.
Students will have an assortment of watercolor brushes available for use, however students are welcome to bring their own good quality watercolor brushes if they have them.
Students should bring simple black bold line work reference materials for simple sketches if they don’t want to use templates available in the class.
Please wear protective clothing to class since dyes stain clothing.
